Led by materials Harley’s furniture manifests both physical durability and aesthetic endurance. Traditions of stonework and decorative crafts are met with clarity of intent and a reductionist framework, leaving only that which is essential to be expressed plainly. Salvaged stone and concrete are reordered and gifted space to breathe to maximise the material impact, transforming them into one off pieces that are balanced by meticulous attention to detail and a responsive spontaneity.
After studying architecture, Harley worked in the crafts and trades with the intention of increasing his familiarity with material capabilities and designing across scales and disciplines. Alongside employment in architectural offices he has worked in residential and commercial construction, produced sculpture, worked in furniture production and as a cabinet maker/joiner, before establishing his own practice in 2018.
Working out of Australia Harley draws largely upon the expansive landscapes that are characterised by the spaces in between, translating these charged distances into a precise working methodology.
