The client wanted something special that could sit within the deep green bedroom of their finely converted Victorian fire station, among bold colour, ornate ceiling roses and a cataclysmic collision of artworks. Their stipulations were for a comfortable elbow-leaning-height bench that would provide a platform for their many objet d'art, and a shallow jewellery drawer was to be included. Otherwise the brief was open. The textured surfaces take their lead from the clients own work - a sculptor whose work is animated by complex but loose mark making - soft and imperfect, leaving the process marks legible and encouraging touch and engagement. The drawers are wrapped in plaster of paris which is cast in thin sheets and carved back to their rhythmic state and finished in the ultra matt quality of chalk paints.
